Part one of our three-part “Business 101″ series reveals how to build patient volume through effective marketing strategies.Marketing is a broad business topic, and one that often makes optometrists eyes glaze over with boredom. In this article, Ill boil the subject down to the basic elements that are important in optometric practice.By understanding and applying the principles presented here, you can increase patient volume and practice revenue beyond your wildest dreams. First, Ill present a long-term marketing philosophy, then a short-term marketing project, which is effective in boosting the slow periods of a growing practice.
Business-to-business selling is much different than business-to-consumer marketing in several important respects. The average business buyer, for instance, is more knowledgeable about the merits (price value, ability to meet business needs, etc.) of products and/or services under consideration. Business buyers are also governed by organizational buying behavior, whereas consumer purchases are typically made by individuals or small groups (such as married couples or roommates). Major business purchases, whether of bulk shipments of office supplies, a single major piece of manufacturing equipment, or an ongoing business service (from security and maintenance to accounting and graphic art services) require far more research on the part of the buyer than do retail purchases by individual consumers, both because of their complexity and their price tag. Many people influence the [business purchase] decisionfrom the purchasing agent and company president to technical professionals and end-users, noted Robert Bly, president of the Center for Technical Communication. Each of these audiences has different concerns and criteria by which they judge you. Finally, and most importantly, business-to-business marketing is based on the knowledgeshared by both buyer and sellerthat the buyer needs to purchase goods and services merely to keep its operations going. The question is whether the buyer chooses to utilize your companys goods and/or services, or those of one of your competitors. Most consumer advertising offers people products they might enjoy but dont really need, stated Bly. But in business-to-business marketing the business buyer wants to buy. Indeed, all business enterprises must routinely buy products and services that help them stay profitable, competitive, and successful.Traditional means of reaching business customers such as catalogs, direct mail, and convention booths remain an important element of marketing for many companies, and they will continue to be valuable tools. But the business-to-business market was fundamentally transformed by the growth of the Internet in the late 1990s, and e-commerce is widely expected to drive the expansion of the B2B world in the foreseeable future. In fact, many analysts believe that B2B spending on the Internet will quickly eclipse that of business-to-consumer spending in that medium. Gartner Group reported in 1999, for instance, that business-to-business transactions reached $237 million, a figure four times greater than the amount generated by business-to-consumer electronic commerce transactions. And Forrester Research, an Internet consulting firm, claimed that business-to-business e-commerce reached about $406 billion in 2000, and estimated that the figure would increase to about $2.7 trillion by 2004. A 2000 analysis by Jupiter Communications offered an even more optimistic assessment of the business e-commerce scene, predicting that the B2B market will account for more than $6.43 trillion in online trade by 2005. The same study indicated that 35 percent of that money will be attributed directly to business-to-business exchanges (also known as net marketplaces, net markets, B2B auctions, and online trading areas).

KPERS What a waste if a retired teachers old district loses him because of a salary cap A state statute that prevents a school district from paying more than $15,000 a year to a retired teacher who wants to return to the profession in the same district is choking off a wealth of educational skill and experience, sometimes in badly understaffed branches of the curriculum.
Baseball CapBaseball team uniforms, whether amateur or professional, always include baseball caps. They help identify players on the field and are essential in order to keep the sun from players eyes. There are currently two different styles of caps available today. One which has a rather tall, boxy crown and is often horizontally striped (the old style cap still popular with those who love the traditions of the game) or the conventional soft crown of six or eight triangular-shaped sections of fabric. Interestingly, most baseball cap manufacturers still make baseball caps in wool, as they have for over a century, as well as more easily washed fabrics such as cotton or cotton-synthetic combinations.

Amniotic Membrane (AM) transplantation appears to shorten healing
time and, in some cases, prevents scarring in those afflicted with
certain, potentially blinding, corneal conditions. These are the
results of two studies appearing in Ophthalmology, the clinical
journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Eye M.D.
Association. In another study, from the Cornea Center at the L.V. Prasad Eye
Institute in Hyderbad, India, AM transplantation, along with surgery,
was used to treat seven eyes of four patients for nonhealing shield
ulcers, a serious vision-threatening complication of vernal
keratoconjunctivitis, a severe form of allergic conjunctivitis.
Although nonhealing shield ulcers are a fairly rare condition, they
can be difficult to manage with conventional therapy, such the use of
steroid drops. The results showed the AM transplants promoted rapid
healing time and reduced scarring.According to Stephen Pflugfelder, M.D., Academy spokesperson and
Professor of Ophthalmology at the Baylor College of Medicine, in
Houston, AM transplantation offers a new modality for treating ocular
surface diseases. “In the case of cicatricial entropion repair, its
use speeds healing and may spare patients from the need to obtain
tissue from other parts of their bodies for grafting on to the back
surface of their eyelids,” he said. “Amniotic membrane also appears
to be an excellent material for promoting healing of inflamed or
damaged corneal tissue resulting from conditions such as non-healing
shield ulcers.”
Middle-aged workers are turning to face-lifts to compete with younger colleagues in what experts say is an increasingly ageist workplace. Dr Waterhouse believes that facial ageing, which generally occurs in the 40s or 50s, can often coincide with changes of direction in life and in peoples careers. Some of his patients think that looking older means less respect in a competitive work environment. He said: “We are all going to be working longer. As we get older we all have to make sure we are presentable. Where once we would have had a haircut, we now consider surgery as a realistic option.” The Harley Medical Group reports that while face-lifts are popular with both sexes, women are also opting for brow and breast lifts and Botox treatments, while men tend to change a feature they have always been unhappy with, such as the nose. People do not want to be considered “over the hill” and ready for retirement by their colleagues before they are ready to go.

Criminal law, 4th ed.
Contemporary criminal law. (bundled with The Concise dictionary of crime and justice, by Mark S. Davis)
Wholesale changes are on the way in Oklahoma County for everyone involved in the practice of criminal law. Judges, lawyers, administrators, law officers, defendants and support staff will all be affected. The changes in criminal practice in Oklahoma County will be significant. This week Ill highlight some of the changes, which are intended to more efficiently utilize limited criminal justice resources. Over the decades, criminal dockets in the states largest county had become a hodgepodge of conflicting and confusing components. Court hearings requiring the appearance of lawyers and defendants included arraignments, pretrials, preliminary hearings, jury call dockets, motion dockets, plea dockets, revocation and acceleration dockets, cost dockets, sentencing dockets and trial dockets. Frequently, prosecutors, defense attorneys and even defendants were scheduled to be in two or more different courtrooms at the same time.

UV Protective Clothing

July 7th, 2008

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. — ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., June 18 /PRNewswire/ — Ready or not, here it comes! June 21st, officially the first day of summer, is around the corner, and if you havent already planned out your sun protection strategy, now is the time. Applying sun screen and covering up with a T-shirt may seem like complete sun protection, but are you really shielded from the damaging rays of the sun? The fact is, you may not be. Harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can actually penetrate clothing — particularly light-colored cotton T-shirts — and leave you vulnerable to skin damage. Most people believe their clothing gives them adequate protection from the sun, stated Dr. Perry Robins, president of The Skin Cancer Foundation. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. In fact, many white cotton T-shirts, a summertime wardrobe staple, only provide an ultraviolet protection factor of 5. That is significantly less than the recommended UPF of 15 and puts the wearer at risk for skin damage. There are two types of ultraviolet rays commonly associated with skin cancer: UVA and UVB. UVB rays can cause a visible burn and UVA rays penetrate more deeply into skin, causing skin to age. Over time, both types of ultraviolet rays may cause more serious skin problems, including skin cancer. Protecting yourself from both types of UV rays can help reduce your risk of developing skin cancer from sun exposure.
German researchers have developed a method for coating fibres with nanoparticles of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Once commercialized, the resulting clothing will protect its wearer from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. German scientists say they have developed a coating of nanoparticles that can be applied to clothes that then protect the wearer from damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation in solar rays-even when the material becomes old and worn. Using a padding process the protective coating is applied to each fibre-sheathing it in a thin film consisting of pigment binder and nanoparticles.

Hypnosis, a medium or modality through which you may become more alert to your own thoughts and feelings, can be appropriate for a number of health conditions, especially ones with emotional or psychological components. While the success rate varies, many health care professionals recommend considering hypnosis for the following: Asthma: Studies suggest that hypnosis may be one effective treatment for asthma, especially when there are emotional and psychological factors involved. Childbirth: Hypnosis can help ease the stress and pain of childbirth. The ASCH estimates that for some women, hypnosis can work as the sole analgesic for childbirth. It not only eliminates the risk posed by drugs, but it may reduce labor time by two to four hours. (It can be used in conjunction with natural childbirth approaches.)
Keywords: altered state, Buddhism, hypnosis, meditation, neurophysiology, phenomenology, suggestibility,There are a couple of perennial questions in the area of hypnosis: (1) Does it involve an altered state of consciousness? (2) Does an induction increase suggestibility? Review of the similarities and differences between hypnosis and meditation leads me to conclude that traditional meditation literature and contemporary meditation research can shed light on both of these questions.
If you are seeking relief for a medical condition, you probably want to find a health care professional-such as a physician, nurse, psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker-who is trained and experienced not only in hypnosis but also with your particular symptom or ailment. Always seek people who have had the maximum training possible in the area in which you are seeking help. Remember, it is your mind they will be working with. Finding a qualified hypnotherapist isnt that hard. Many health care professionals licensed in other fields practice hypnosis, so chances are good that your health care professional can give you a referral. Two major organizations that are recognized as having high professional standards are The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) and The Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (SCEH). Both can provide the names of qualified practitioners in your area:

WHY does some peoples hair go grey? - Robin Jones of Motherwell HAIR going grey is a natural part of growing older. The root of every strand of hair is surrounded by a tube of tissue under the skin that is called the hair follicle. Each follicle contains a certain number of pigment cells. These cells continuously produce a chemical called melanin that gives the growing shaft of hair its colour. As we get older, the pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die. When there are fewer pigment cells in a hair follicle, that strand of hair will no longer contain as much melanin and will become a more transparent colour - like grey, silver or white - as it grows.
Coverage of protest marches always seems to be a contentious issue. We get into trouble if we dont cover them, and often we get into trouble when we do. Estimates of numbers on any given march is a frequent matter of dispute, and when, last year, the figure we gave for an anti-war march was considered too low by readers who had attended it, they made sure we were told. The article, Ms Moore said, “seemed focused on picking fun at appearances, hair colour, `sensible clothing and belittling the attendees. I thought the kind of journalism that focuses on appearance and attractiveness was being avoided. It was usually used when writing about women and, quite rightly, decried as belittling and sexist. Am I to assume it is OK to resort to this when it is ageist?” I put these criticisms to the author of the piece, Robin Stummer. “There was no picking fun at appearances,” he said. “The comment about hair dye was made as a pointer to the fact that many retired people - now, in 2004 - were born in the 1940s, and are just as able and willing to change their appearance in later life as people 30, 40, or 50 years their junior. And that does mean hair and clothes.”

The pixels are running hot in the highly competitive digital camera marketplace. Management zooms in on the trends and technology for 2004. The migration from film to digital photography became obvious in 2003. Have you noticed, when in a crowd, the number of people holding those tiny digital devices at arms length to take pictures, compared to the few still squinting into film camera viewfinders? According to Michelle Slaughter, director of digital photography trends at IRG, digital cameras have become essential communications devices. “People are becoming accustomed to the immediacy of digital photography and are integrating digital photos into their daily communications with friends, family and the workplace. Consequently, digital cameras have a higher intrinsic value than film cameras.”
Whether its on the Web, in your brochures and other mailings, or in a multimedia presentation, the easiest way to incorporate photographic images is with a digital camera. In this roundup we put nine digital cameras to the test and came up with good investments, overall favorites, as well as noteworthy special-purpose cameras.

Another year of solid output growth. * Construction has been led for the last few years by residential investment. Last year was the third in a row in which residential investment in the Triad area grew by more than 4% in real terms. Reflecting the buoyancy of housing markets worldwide, spending was strong in almost all countries except Germany and to a lesser extent Japan. This is now likely to be the high water mark for residential investment and it should slow quite sharply in the second half of 2006 and into 2007. Interest rates are rising in most of the major economies and activity in at least some housing markets is starting to respond to this. Consequently housing investment growth could be almost 2% lower this year than last and is likely to be virtually stagnant in 2007.
The growth of construction activity was the in 15 years. This robust growth was again driven by the construction of motorways, in addition to the pick-up in the construction of non-residential buildings, which reached its highest level since 1999 The value of construction put in place surged by 15.3% over 2005. Growth in civil engineering totalled 16.8%. The construction of buildings rose by 14.0%, within that, non-residential construction was up 17.7% while residential construction increased by 2.6%. Based on detailed data about the issued building permits we estimate that the construction of wholesale and retail trade buildings and hotels picked up last year. In interpreting the data on the value of residential construction put in place we note that these figures exclude the activity of smaller companies (see the note under the table), in which, in our estimate, the construction of buildings is the main activity. The number of workers in the construction sector rose sharply in 2006, especially in the final quarter. The number of people employed in construction was on average 7.5% higher in 2006 than in 2005. In the fourth quarter alone, it increased by as much as 9.7% over the year before The number of employees by activity rose particularly in building completion, in the latter pari of the year it also increased in general construction In lerms of employee status, the number of individual private entrepreneurs and their employees rose the most last year. The number of planned dwellings and the total planned floor area of buildings continued to increase in the final quarter of 2006. The planned floor area of new buildings and extensions was 27.5% higher than in the same quarter of 2005 (43 8% for non-residential buildings and 16.9% for residential buildings) In 2006 as a whole, the total floor area of the planned buildings increased by 35.8%. within that by 19.7% for residential buildings and by 56 0% for non-residential buildings The building permits issued last year were granted for the construction of 8.260 new dwellings, which is 19.6% more than in 2005 and 47.0% more than the average of the previous seven years (since these data have been available)

When you meet people like Robert Von Ancken, its hard to understand how they find enough hours in the day for all the work they do. Von Ancken, who serves as an executive managing director of the metropolitan valuation and consulting practice with Grubb Ellis, does appraisals for such projects as the World Trade Centec, the Farley Post Office and the West Side Rail Yards during the day, then goes home to run his own acquisition and disposition business. There were few engineering jobs available when he graduated, so he decided he would give real estate a try. However, just weeks after he started as office leasing canvasser with Julien Studley, Von Ancken was called to active duty by the U.S. Army Reserve and his plans fell through once again. After a year of Army service in Panama, Von Ancken came back to New York and enrolled in the graduate real estate program at City University.

They had lost their last two games of the 1998 season and waved goodbye to most of their top offensive stars, including their quarterback, running back and No. 1 wide receiver. It would be a rebuilding year for Kansas State, everyone decided. Everyone was wrong, of course. Bill Snyders Wildcats hardly missed a beat, winning 10 regular-season games and losing only at Nebraska. A survey of sports editors and sportscasters gave the nod to Kansas States football fortunes over a host of interesting and intriguing developments making headlines during the year.

BIS integrates physical and electronic security, access control, CCTV, fire systems, imaging, photo badging, and building management systems by allowing components to easily exchange data. Have traditional agency management systems become obsolete? For the last 25 years agents have focused on management systems as their core agency technology. The rise of the Internet and the availability of data and functionality through carrier and other Web sites suggests that a new generation of agency technology is both possible and necessary for agency success.Over the last few years, Ive spent some time wondering whether technology and industry developments have obviated the need for traditional agency management systems. Perhaps youve been wondering the same thing. It may be time to rethink whats possible and whats needed for agency technology. This column is an attempt to assist that thinking process.
The General Accounting Office (GAO) is preparing recommendations to Congress on the future of these systems. As input to this report, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Standing Committee on Planning (SCOP) surveyed the states on their use of the management systems, and endorsed the voluntary continuation of these systems. Concurrently, the FHWA-sponsored Management Systems Integration Committee (MSIC) is examining ways to integrate the information produced by management systems into state and local transportation planning and decision-making. ISTEA required that states implement management systems covering six areas: intermodal transportation facilities, traffic congestion, highway safety, bridge, pavement, and public transportation systems. The National Highway System Designation Act of 1995 repealed this mandate (with the exception of congestion management systems for Transportation Management Areas), and ordered the GAO, in cooperation with the states, to report to Congress regarding the recommended future of management systems. The GAO made preliminary recommendations to Congress in midOctober. The GAOs final report on the management systems is expected to be released in January 1997. The SCOP created a management systems task force with representation from 10 states. In recommendations unanimously endorsed by the SCOP, the task force concluded that it:

Second Lieutenant Edward Harrison, 28, a member of the universitys Officer Training Corps, is believed to have woken at dawn and wandered off on his own to photograph wild animals at the Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya on Sunday morning. Fellow travellers were woken by the sound of the elephant and later discovered his body outside the secure compound of the Sopa safari lodge.

Some legal advice on aspects of the Internet. David Lewis (1) E-payment and e-money trends are you protected? The full potential of the Internet will only be realised when electronic payment systems are more secure. Currently the Internet lacks a fast, easy and secure way to let consumers buy and sell electronically, and theres no electronic money system on the market that is legal tender.
They argue that, if marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and other drugs were legalized, several positive things would probably occur: (1) drug prices would fall; (2) users would obtain their drugs at low, government-regulated prices, and they would no longer be forced to resort to crime in order to support their habits, (3) levels of drug-related crime, and particularly violent crime, would significantly decline, resulting in less crowded courts, jails, and prisons (this would allow law-enforcement personnel to focus their energies on the “real criminals” in society); and the drug production, distribution, and sale would no longer be controlled by organized crime, and thus such criminal syndicates as the Colombian cocaine “cartels,” the Jamaican “posses,” and the various “mafias” around the country and the world would be decapitalized, and the violence associated with drug distribution rivalries would be eliminated. By contrast, the anti-legalization camp argues that violent crime would not necessarily decline in a legalized drug market. In fact, there are three reasons why it might actually increase. First, removing the criminal sanctions against the possession and distribution of illegal drugs would make them more available and attractive and, hence, would create large numbers of new users. Second, an increase in use would lead to a greater number of dysfunctional addicts who could not support themselves, their habits, or their lifestyles through legitimate means. Hence crime would be their only alternative. Third, more users would mean more of the violence associated with the ingestion of drugs. These divergent points of view tend to persist because the relationships between drugs and crime are quite complex and because the possible outcomes of a legalized drug market are based primarily on speculation. However, it is possible, from a careful review of the existing empirical literature on drugs and violence, to make some educated inferences.

The report also noted that the countys payouts in medical malpractice lawsuits dropped from $15 million to $9 million and general liabilities fell from $41 million to $13 million.
LAWYERS who had wanted General Pinochet extradited were still trying early last week to decide what “legal steps” they could take to stop him going to Chile. For some reason I found myself thinking of the sad advertisements one used to see occasionally in the personal columns: “Public school man seeks interesting job, anything legal considered.” But of course I was confusing two different functions of the word legal. Ethical began by meaning “to do with ethics”, and only later came to mean being good. The purist in me still winces when someone says “aesthetic” when they mean “in good taste”. (Aesthetic originally meant “to do with the science of perception”, then “to do with taste”, good, bad or indifferent.) But there was never any need for legal to carry two meanings, because theres a perfectly good alternative that takes half the burden off it: lawful, a nice old word from the late Middle Ages (its parent word, law, appears to be of ancient Scandinavian origin). Everyone understands the difference between “legal business” and the “lawful business” that most of us spend our lives going about. Why couldnt those job-seekers have put “anything lawful considered”? Lawyers use lawful, too; they speak of a “lawful killing”. They dont say “a legal killing” (which, if it meant anything, would presumably refer to their fees).

Developing a “Culture of Safety” A year ago we wrote about the complex process involved in identifying, categorizing, and assessing medical error in health care in the United States (”Assessing Medical Error in Health Care,” Health Progress, November– December 2001, pp. 14-17). That article discussed the 1999 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on medical error, “To Err Is Human,” and the erosion of public trust in U.S. health care.
FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.

Earlier this fall, as I was checking out some of my regular Web sites, I came across some ideas worth consideration. Across the nation libraries are in trouble: not enough money; facing a personnel shortage; low pay for library staff because their value is not clearly understood, etc. * Make sure everyone is greeted with a smile and cheerful presence, be it in person or on the phone. * Consider adapting the Wal-Mart concept of a greeter.
Demand for the six-year instruments, which were denominated in pesos, doubled the offering. The Mexican government sold $1 billion in 10-year bonds in international markets. Even the corporate sector is in on the trend. Telefonos de Mexico, a Mexican telecommunications company, sold $1.30 billion in debt on Wall Street. Grupo Posadas, a Mexican hotel chain, offered in the United States $75 million in bonds due in 2011. That sale came only three months after a $125 million issue in October 2004.
MARKETING Marketing pertains to the interactive process that requires developing, pricing, placing, and promoting goods, ideas, or services in order to facilitate exchanges between customers and sellers to satisfy the needs and wants of consumers. Thus, at the very center of the marketing process is satisfying the needs and wants of customers.

Put usability first; practice simplicity Scores of books purport to offer insight into successful Web site design. At least one actually does. Jakob Nielsens Designing Web Usability (published by New Rider, Indianapolis) is accessible (with plenty of color plates illustrating his ideas) but dense with practical and sometimes idiosyncratic advice. It is recommended reading for agency principals and Web managers alike. Some people label Nielsen opinionated, but thats his value. His insights are based on experience and experiments, not simply taste and intuition. You can be as clever as you want with your Web site but once you read Nielsen, you may feel like an idiot. So read him first.

The ABC network sitcom Home Improvement first aired on September 17 1991 and ran for eight seasons through May 1999. During only its second season the show was renewed for three additional seasons an unusual decision in the television industry. Based on the stand-up comedy routine of its star Tim Allen (born Timothy Allen Dick in 1953) Home Improvement initially reflected Allens love of power tools cars and Sears department stores as well as mirroring his own family situation. Allen portrayed Tim Taylor the host of cable TVs “Tool Time.” His wife Jill was portrayed by Patricia Richardson. More than just comedy though Home Improvement epitomized the concerns of the largest generation in history the baby boomers. The Taylors were a representation of the average American family of the 1990s and their struggles although treated with light-hearted humor reflected the struggles of the shows demographic. In the main three fundamental concerns of the boomer generation were examined on a weekly basis–relationships family and the search for spirituality.

Governments, where is the stability? With the latest election result in Italy, (our eighth biggest export market), there will be further uncertainty even after a new Government is formed. We have seen Germany (our second biggest export market) struggle towards its Grand Coalition. It suffers high unemployment, its economy is sluggish, but its export sales are high.
Why sell overseas? I am often asked the question “Why export?” In the UK, businesses are subject to much competition and price cutting in the current climate is intense. However, there are approximately 230 countries overseas where your products or service may be vital. At a time when the FSA reports that the level of personal debt threatens the economy, and assuming that property prices fall and domestic demand declines, the only way to increase sales and boost profit is to export. I thought it would be useful to report on some export successes, for two companies who have been selling overseas for less than six years. iOra, a British company that develops unique mobile infrastructure technology and products, was formed in 1997 with Founder and Angel Investment. In December 2002, the company announced that the US Navy is successfully deploying its mobile intranet to maintain permanent remote access to critical data. This ensures that the Navys fleet is kept in top operational condition, sending information, including medical procedures, technical support and training for onboard personnel, to and from its ships in a timely manner and in a user-friendly format.

International family law; an introduction.
The firm limits its practice to family law.
A volunteer committee organized by the Utah Bar Association will spend the next few months untangling several divorce, child custody and other family law bills that knotted up at the end of the last session of the Legislature. Both the philosophical motivation and practical application of about 20 bills will be evaluated by a 17-member ad hoc committee, which was granted permission to organize by the Judiciary Interim Committee last week. Bills that addressed topics such as establishing a state office that would enforce court-ordered child visitation, false allegations in a divorce and refining child support payment schedules when children spend extended time with a noncustodial parent created a lot of confusion, especially in the Senate at the close of the session.

Consider adding a legal service plan to your employee perks A recent study found that three lawsuits are filed every second in the United States. That means most people are more likely to be involved in some sort of legal action over the next year than to be hospitalized. And, many of those people will be your credit unions employees. Employers struggling with a tight job market are learning that providing legal services as a benefit is a low-cost, low-hassle incentive for prospective and current employees. The plans cost $10-$16 per month for full family coverage and rarely increase in cost no matter how many employees use the services.
As Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc. re-launches a bigger version of its television programming guide, the company faces rising legal costs associated with a Securities and Exchange Commission inquiry of its former officers. Several former officers, including founder Henry Yuen, are under investigation by the SEC for inflating licensing revenues. The trial has been put on hold as both sides battle over whether their severance payments may be frozen. For the April-June period, Gemstar reduced legal expenses by $5.8 million to $600,000. But the company also filed a complaint last month against its former insurance carriers alleging they have failed to pay claims filed under its policies.
